I think religion can make you a better person, and I think it can also make you a worse person actually.  I think the very best and the very worst of mankind can come from religion.  And it's not so much religion, it's intention and what you do with that religion.  If it's meant to make the world a better place, then religion makes you a better person.  If it's to make the world more fearful and more violent... no it doesn't make you better.
