Professional Development

Together For Humanity offers a number of NESA registered Professional Learning courses.  Our courses aim to:

  • Explore the rationale for diversity education in Australian schools.
  • Support teachers in the development of Intercultural Understanding Capabilities in students.
  • Provide guidance around strategies to create more culturally inclusive and cohesive school environments.
  • Help teachers feel more confident in their approach to diversity education.
  • Share practical resources and strategies with teachers.

The courses all align with the Australian Professional Teaching Standards for teachers and are free.  Your registered hours will be added to your NESA account at the end of each calendar month.


The courses are:

1. Difference Differently – Introducing Diversity Education

This course is suitable for all school staff, including non-teaching staff.
This professional learning course explores participants' understandings of and attitudes toward diversity.  It examines the rationale for diversity education in Australian schools

Difference Differently: Introducing Diversity Education will contribute 2 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing 4.1.2 and 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

2. Difference Differently – Diversity Education in the Classroom

This course is suitable for all teaching staff.
Using current research and practical examples, this course explores teaching and learning strategies that can be used in the classroom to build students' intercultural understanding

Difference Differently: Diversity Education in the Classroom will contribute 2 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing 1.3.2 and 2.1.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

3. Difference Differently – Whole School Approaches to Diversity Education

This course is suitable for school leaders and teaching staff.
This course examines ways to manage and/or celebrate diversity through whole-school engagement and strategies

Difference Differently: Whole School Approaches to Diversity will contribute 2 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing 1.3.3 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher and Highly Accomplished Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

4. Cohesion in Diversity: Core Module – Good practice begins with research

This course is suitable for all teaching staff.
This course is the Core unit of 4 courses exploring social cohesion in Australian schools.  It draws on Australian research into best practice relating to intercultural understanding by exploring the Intercultural Understanding Continuum and the six domains necessary for effective ICU in schools.

Completing Cohesion in Diversity: Core Module - Good practice begins with research will contribute 2 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 6.2.2 and. 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

5. Cohesion in Diversity: Developing cultural competence in a low diversity school

This course is suitable for all teaching staff.
This course is specifically suited for schools with low cultural diversity.  It includes ways to develop students' intercultural understanding through curriculum, fostering partnerships with other schools, helping support EAL/D students and making the schools build environment reflect a commitment to diversity.

Completing Cohesion in Diversity: Developing cultural competence in a low diversity school will contribute 3 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 1.3.2, 3.7.2 and 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

6. Cohesion in Diversity: Building cohesion in a culturally diverse school

This course is suitable for all teaching staff.
This course explores strategies for enhancing social cohesion at culturally diverse schools.  It includes strategies to facilitate discussions on controversial issues, suggestions for enhancing parent engagement and an exploration of ways to engage students in projects that build cohesion.

Completing Cohesion in Diversity: Building cohesion in a culturally diverse school will contribute 3 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 3.7.2, 4.1.2 and 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

7. Cohesion in Diversity: Addressing alienation and enhancing connectedness

This course is suitable for all teaching staff.
This course explores strategies support students who may feel alienated or marginalised due to experiences of prejudice related to racial or religious identities.  It explores strategies for having difficult conversations, engaging parents, understanding extremism and helping students reengage with learning.  Case studies explored are from both Primary and Secondary contexts.

Cohesion in Diversity: Addressing alienation and enhancing connectedness will contribute 3 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 3.7.2, 4.1.2 and 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

8. Creating inclusive classrooms and communities through a focus on intercultural understanding (Face to Face Course)

This course is suitable for all teaching staff.
This face to face course can be delivered to whole school staff sessions.  This course explores how intercultural understanding skills can create more inclusive school environments and increase a sense of belonging and wellbeing for students.  Teachers will explore strategies to help students challenge stereotypes.

Creating inclusive classrooms and communities through a focus on Intercultural Understanding will contribute 1 hour and 30 minutes of NESA Registered PD addressing 1.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
