Diversity Q & A

Is there a dominant culture in Australia?

I think the culture that predominantly stands out in Australia is the culture of individuality.  It is no longer common to have close knit communities, and it seems to me that the self is always put ahead of the group.  When I lived in Malaysia for example it was the other way around and people did things together more than on their own.  Here it seems that norm is that people do things on heir own, and occasionally together.

In Malaysia, many people are part of the family and seen as uncles and aunts, whether they are blood relatives or not.  In Australia, when we celebrate with the family here in Australia it is only the immediate family.
