Diversity Q & A

Does your religion or culture influence your views on sex?

Zalman

Many Jews practice marriage laws that dictate a time for couples to be together sexually and times when they abstain according to a woman’s cycle.  Part of the law involves a woman going into a special pool of water called a Mikvah once a month, which marks the end of the separation period.  Many people find that this rhythm enhances the closeness of the couple, particularly at the time of reuniting.

Intimacy is not just about reproducing; it also about something called 'Shalom Bayit' which means peace in the home.  Judaism recognises the great power of sexuality and tries to make sure it serves a purpose; that is keeping families together.
