Do non-religious people still have beliefs?

Sujato

Everyone has beliefs – our minds can't work without them.  As a Buddhist, I don't believe in God.  I share this belief with many non-religious people.  But I am also aware that I might be wrong – maybe there is a God after all!  The important thing is to be aware of what our beliefs are, and to reflect on them.  Are these beliefs true?  Do they agree with the facts?  Do they help or harm?  Our beliefs are never completely certain – no matter how strongly we believe something, we might be wrong.  This is why we should never criticise or look down on anyone who has different beliefs than we do.
