Diversity Q & A

Have you been discriminated against or faced prejudice?

Ed

I wanted to donate blood and was refused because I am gay.  There was a reason behind the decision, in that blood-borne diseases, like HIV, are more common in the gay community.  I had a certificate from my doctor, promising that I was not carrying a blood-borne virus but I was still not allowed to donate blood.  I remember feeling angry with the organisation that had this rule.  The rule has now been changed, and I am able to donate blood.  And, as easy as that, I don't feel angry with the organisation any more.
